Spiders Secure Top-Seed At A-10's With Win Over St. Joe's

April 20, 2008

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's lacrosse team concluded its 2008 regular season schedule with a win over Saint Joseph's, 13-9. Junior Mandy Friend scored a game-high six goals and added three assists for a total of nine points, just one short of tying the Richmond single-game record. With the win, the Spiders have secured the top-seed at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships next weekend at Massachusetts.

Due to inclement weather, the game endured two 30 minute delays, one in the first half and another in the second; the contest lasted a season-high two hours and 43 minutes.

The Hawks led the Spiders, 4-2 heading into the first weather delay. St. Joe's got on the scoreboard first just under two minutes into play with an unassisted goal from Lindsey-Kate McCool.

Richmond senior captain Jenna Hubbard answered McCool's notch with one of her own off an assist from Mandy Friend just a few minutes later, tying the game at one. Friend then earned her first goal of the day less than a minute later putting Richmond up, 2-1.

St. Joe's put in three-straight goals before the officials' timeout due to thunder in the area, two coming from Christina Colangelo.

After the 30-minute postponement, the Spiders came out with a spark scoring three unanswered goals in just 35 seconds. Junior Allison Furstenburg netted two consecutive goals and Friend added in another to put the Spiders up on the Hawks, 5-4. Furstenburg finished the game with two goals and an assist for three points.

Friend kept up her attack putting in two more goals before the end of the half, giving her four goals in 30 minutes and giving the Spiders a 7-5 cushion at intermission.

To start off the second half, Friend notched her final two goals of the day back to back. Senior Claire Cunniff helped her out on the first and Allison Furstenburg lent an assist on her second.

Lexie Marrocco and Anne Ryan put in their first goals of the game, putting the Spiders up 11-7 heading into the game's second weather delay.

The game resumed with just over 11 minutes to play in regulation. Marrocco was the first to strike after the stoppage with an assist from senior Zara Nematollahi. Just two minutes, Ryan added her second goal of the day off an assist from Friend to put Richmond up 13-7.

Just thirty seconds after Ryan's goal, St. Joe's Abby Renninger surged to score an unassisted goal, the first St. Joe's goal in over 10 minutes of play. Renninger would score again just a minute later bringing the Hawks within four but was not enough to overcome the Spiders.

The Spiders have secured the top-seed heading into next weekend's semi-final game at McGuirkin Stadium in Amherst, Mass. and a share of the A-10 regular season title with Temple. Richmond will face off against fourth-seed UMass Friday, April 25 at 1 p.m. ET.
