Richmond's Second Half Comeback Not Enough To Get Past JMU
March 15, 2008
HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior Lexie Marrocco led the Spiders in the goals column as she recorded a hat trick as they fell to James Madison, 11-10. Allison Furstenburg led in overall points with five, made up of two goals and three assists for Richmond. The Dukes led the Spiders by two at halftime but Richmond was able to rally out-scoring JMU 4-3 in the second half, but was not enough to get the win. Also scoring for the Spiders was Mandy Friend who put in two goals and added two assists. Senior Claire Cunniff scored two goals of her own while Jenna Hubbard put in one goal for Richmond. The Spiders made a late run to try to overcome a four goal deficit in the second half but could not finish off the Dukes. Richmond started the day's scoring off with a goal from Lexie Marrocco assisted by classmate Allison Furstenburg to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead just one minute into play. JMU retaliated with a goal just one minute later off of a Natasha Fuchs' free position shot to tie the game up. From there the Dukes went on to four straight goals to give them a 5-1 advantage over the Spiders. As the first half came to a close, junior Mandy Friend earned her first notch of the day with less than a minute left in the period to bring the Spiders within two. Friend finished the day with two goals and two assists for a total of four points.
To start the second half off, the Dukes put in two-straight goals to get a four-point cushion on the Spiders. Richmond then answered with two-straight goals of their own. Friend started the run off with the Spiders' lone free-position shot of the game to bring the Spiders back within three. Senior captain Jenna Hubbard then got on the scoreboard with her lone goal of the day with help from Lexie Marrocco for Richmond's eighth goal of the day. As the Spiders' attack kept finding the net, JMU was given a free-position shot where Emily Haller was able to capitalize for the Dukes putting them back up by three. Richmond surged on as time kept ticking. Marrocco earned her third goal of the game off a helper from Friend with less than seven minutes left to play to make the score 11-9. The Spiders earned their tenth goal with just 27 seconds left to play off an unassisted goal from Allison Furstenburg to give the Dukes a one-goal advantage. However, Richmond would not be able to put one more in as the Spiders fell 11-10. After playing three straight road games, the Spiders return to First Market Stadium to face off against Towson Saturday, March 22 for a 2 p.m. ET game. |
