Late Richmond Run Not Enough To Get Past Charlotte

March 1, 2008

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Defending Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Johanna McKnight scored 22 points for the Spiders as they fell to Charlotte, 76-66. Redshirt senior Christina Campion was just one rebound away from recording a double-double as she scored 20 points and pulled down nine boards. Scoring was spread across the 49ers squad with four players earning double-figures. Erin Floyd led the way for Charlotte with 16 points, going five-for-nine from the floor.

The Spiders went on a 15-4 run with just minutes left at Halton Arena but could not pull out the victory. A good three-point shot from McKnight brought the Spiders within two points with just 2:52 left to play. The 49ers answered with a good jumper from Floyd to put Charlotte up by four.

One play later, McKnight stole back a Spider turnover to take it end-to-end for a wide-open lay-up cutting Charlotte's lead to just two points again.

"McKnight was just excellent," head coach Michael Shafer said. "She works hard every single game and competes for us."

Redshirt junior, Johanna McKnight, played her heart out to earn 22 points to lead Richmond. McKnight shot a perfect seven-for-seven from the free throw line. The Spiders missed just three free throws, making 13-for-16 against the 49ers.

Christina Campion also finished her last regular season game as a Richmond Spider with an impressive performance. The forward put up 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

"I thought Camps played really well tonight," Shafer added. "If our other kids played as hard as those two [McKnight and Campion], we can win games. We can't win on talent alone; we need to start competing more."

Four different 49ers earned double-digits. Floyd led the way with 16 points, Traci Ray scored 15, Sabrina Gregory put up 14 and Wendy Stywalt added 10 to round out Charlotte's scoring. Gregory also pulled down nine rebounds to lead Charlotte in her last regular season game as a 49er.

Richmond will now prepare for the Atlantic 10 Championships next weekend, March 7-10. Eighth seeded Richmond will see Duquesne in the first round of play at Saint Joseph's Friday, March 7 at 12 p.m. ET.
