UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team will make its 15th postseason appearance in school history, including the fifth in the last eight years when the Spiders play at state-rival Virginia on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the inaugural College Basketball Invitational.

The Spiders are one of 74 Division I teams in the country to earn an at-large bid to a postseason tournament as they make their first postseason berth since 2004. Richmond is one of 113 teams in postseason play out of the 340 teams in Division I men's college basketball.

The NIT had cut down from 40 teams down to 32 last season, prompting the Gazelle Group, which produces numerous nationally-recognized college basketball tournaments, such as the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic and the Legends Classic, to start a new postseason tournament.

Richmond's game at Virginia will be shown nationally on Fox College Sports as the first of eight first round games in the 16-team tournament. The College Basketball Invitational is single-elimination, up until the Championship Series, with all games being played at campus sites.

Prior to the Semi-finals, the four remaining teams will be re-seeded. The Championship Series will be a best of three series (home-away-home), in which the higher seed will get the first and last (if necessary) home games.

The winner of the Virginia-Richmond game will meet the winner of Rider at Old Dominion on March 24. The CBI includes teams from the ACC (Virginia), Pac 10 (Washington), Big East (Cincinnati), Atlantic 10 (Richmond), Mountain West (Utah) and Conference USA (Houston).

"We're excited for the opportunity to continue our season in postseason play," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "We will be playing a very talented Virginia team in a great environment for college basketball, so that can only help our younger guys while giving our seniors a chance to play more basketball in a Richmond uniform."

Richmond is one of eight Atlantic 10 teams to earn postseason bids in the NCAA, NIT or CBI. The conference earned three NCAA Tournament bids going to Xavier, Saint Joseph's and Temple. Dayton, Charlotte, Massachusetts and Rhode Island earned spots in the NIT.

Richmond had six wins against teams that are in postseason play, including a victory over NCAA Tournament participant and Atlantic 10 Champion Temple. The Spiders defeated the ACC's fourth-place team Virginia Tech (NIT), then No. 16 ranked Dayton (NIT) and swept two meetings with NIT participant Charlotte. Richmond also defeated CBI participant Old Dominion.

The youthful Spiders finished fourth in the Atlantic 10, receiving 80.3 percent of its scoring from freshman and sophomores. The Spiders had won 12 of the 18 before losing the last two games to NCAA Tournament teams Xavier and Saint Joseph's. The back-to-back losses were Richmond's first consecutive losses in over three months. The Spiders have not lost three consecutive games this season. Richmond's last three-game losing streak was from Jan. 31-Feb. 7, 2007.

The Spiders are led by sophomore Dan Geriot, a third-team All-Atlantic 10 selection who averages 14.0 points per game and had two 30-point performances this season. Geriot also leads the team in rebounding at 5.5 boards per game.

Sophomore David Gonzalvez is second on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game. He scored a season-high 25 in a loss to then No. 3 ranked Memphis when the Spiders were down three with six minutes to play.

Freshman Kevin Anderson, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, is third on the team at 10.7 points per game. He was tabbed to the conference's All-Rookie team after starting the last 22 games as a true freshman point guard for the Spiders. He is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in minutes played at 34.93 per game and is third in the conference at steals at 1.77 per game.
