Art Maillet begins his second year as part of the Spiders staff as a volunteer assistant coach for all events. As a retired teacher and coach with 39 years experience in the classroom and 36 as a coach, he brings knowledge, wisdom and understanding with him. While at Edison High School in Minneapolis, Minn., where he spent most of his teaching and coaching career, he was honored as the Region and Section 5 Coach of the Year on three occasions. He retired from teaching in 2006 with 39 years experience - 18 at the high school level and 21 at the middle school/junior high level. During that time he served as a track & field coach for 36 years, cross country for 25 years and a basketball coach for six years. While in college he was one of the premier distance runners in the Atlantic Coast Conference while attending the University of North Carolina. He earned victories in the mile, two-mile and cross country at the ACC Championships and served as the Tar Heels' cross country captain, student representative on the UNC Athletic Council and the Monogram Club vice president. He earned at least one medal in all six distance events during his running career (880Y, 1000Y, one-mile, two-mile, two-mile relay, cross country). He has also been honored as a member of the ACC 50th Anniversary All-Time Cross Country Team. His collegiate personal best marks include: 880Y (1:52.2), 1000Y (2:16.1), one-mile (4:08.6), two-mile (9:21.9). In 1965 he graduated with his B.A. in history, health & physical education from UNC. He earned his M.A. a year later in health & physical education, while working as a graduate assistant for the Tar Heels. He returned for post-graduate work in 1974 to complete his Teaching Certification at the University of Minnesota with an emphasis in the Education Specialist Program - Learning Disabilities. He is also an Education Foundation Award Winner and a member of the Order of the Old Well (recognition of high attainment in scholarship and leadership). As a true runner he still competes within U.S. Masters' Track & Field Competition and ran 4:46 for the Indoor Mile at age 47 and a sub-5:00 Mile at age 50. He was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Jamaica High School in 1960. He has two children, Sarah -- who lives in Rogers, Minn. with her husband Paul and their two children, Riley and Elise -- and Jim, who lives in Boston. Art and his wife Linda reside in Richmond where she is a teacher at Deep Run High School. |
