Spiders Shine At Carolina Classic, Samella Koroma Wins Weight Throw

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The women's distance medley relay recorded the fastest time in the Atlantic 10 this season, leading the Richmond indoor track & field teams at the Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic this weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. The women's DMR finished second, while freshman Samella Koroma won the weight throw and sophomore Matt Llano took silver in the 5,000. The women's DMR of Nicol Traynor, Tara Markey, Diana Filtz and Amy Van Alstine posted a time of 11:52.03, which was good for the silver medal and a new standard in the A-10 this season. Van Alstine also had an impressive showing in the mile, finishing fourth and setting the A-10's fastest time this season in 4:58.10. Filtz took eighth in the event in 5:09.03. Traynor's time in the 3,000 of 10:05.92 was good for the silver medal, while Erin Lunny was ninth in the event in 10:32.65. In the 5,000, Kylee Schuler captured the silver medal in posting the A-10's second-fastest time of 17:54.99. Mary Bertram was fourth (18:20.10) and Shelby Faircloth was sixth (18:27.72). In the sprint events, Jasmine Major was 23rd in the 60-meter (7.83) and 19th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.13), missing a spot in the finals by just .09 seconds.). Jasmine Cottle's time of 59.70 in the 400 was good for 22nd.
A freshman, Koroma took the Spiders' lone goal medal in the meet crushing the field in the weight throw by more than four feet with a mark of 50-8. That distance is a personal-best for the rookie and the sixth-best in the conference this indoor season. Heather Roush was third in the weight throw (46-2.5) and ninth in the shot put (38-7.75). In the long jump, Megan Ney's mark of 18-0.5 was good for 11th, but ranks sixth in the A-10. On the men's side, Llano's time in the 5,000 of 14:47.89 was a personal-best and ranks as the fifth-fastest in the A-10. Hunter Willis took fifth in event in 15:16.80. The bronze medal in the mile went to Jonathan Molz, who finished in a season-best time of 4:16.74. Jon Wilson was 12th in 3,000 in 8:47.92. The men's DMR was seventh in 10:30.87. The indoor track & field team returns to action next weekend, with competition at both the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg and the New Balance College Classic in New York City. |
